Word of the Day (11) – Quran

Understanding when Allah uses Quran vs. Kitaab
The Quran is an oral revelation (recited) that was documented in a book (Kitaab)

Usually, Allah SWT refers to the Quran when talking about the miraculous aspect of the Quran:

And it was not [possible] for this Qur’an to be produced by other than Allah, but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

Say, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.”

On the other hand, the KITAB is the Arabic word referring to the book, the reference, the source of legislation and judgment.

And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allah is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.
